Interesting Fact: The José Olaya Cooperative is named for Afro-Peruvian independence hero José Olaya. José Olaya was born in Chorrillos (near Lima) in 1782 and he fought for Peruvian independence and helped to transport secret messages by swimming between the government in Callao and the independence fighters in Lima. Olaya was a fisherman and was executed by the colonial government after being caught in the middle of one of his secret missions.
