The Small Organic Farmers' Association (SOFA) project began in 1993 with the vision to establish a prosperous community living in harmony with the environment, and today there are over 1,600 small-scale landowner members. Today, the majority of tea is still grown on monoculture plantations that stripe the soil of nutrients. Unlike this typical model, the SOFA members sustain the land by growing a variety of foods including pepper, cloves and ginger, but tea is their most important crop. Bio Foods acts as the processor and packer for all SOFA tea. Bio Foods' mission is to provide market access to small farmers so that they can stay on the land, provide strong livelihoods for their families, and maintain healthy and vibrant communities.
