Started in 2003, the MCC Coffee Project is a collaboration between Equal Exchange and the Mennonite Central Committee to involve more Mennonite communities and individuals in supporting small farmers around the world.
For each pound of fairly traded coffee, chocolate, tea, and foods Mennonites purchase through the MCC Coffee Project, 20 cents per pound goes to the MCC's Small Farmer Fund. That Fund amounted to $2,388.92 in 2015 alone!
From Burkina Faso to India, Guatemala to Chad, MCC partners with organizations and small-scale farmers around the world to ensure a secure food supply for communities and families. In Burkina Faso, women farmers improve access to food for their families through conservation agriculture practices, seed production, off-season vegetable production and nutrition education. In India, families in rural villages are increasing crop production through trainings and implementation of organic farming. In Chad, MCC’s partners offer trainings in vaccinating animals and producing organic fertilizer and compost. In Guatemala, Ixil youth are establishing themselves as small farmers through gaining secure access to land, strengthening ancestral agricultural practices and improving the local economy through supporting local farmers markets so that Ixil youth can stay in their rural communities and live well off the land, instead of migrating.
The Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), a worldwide ministry of Anabaptist churches, shares God's love and compassion for all in the name of Christ by responding to basic human needs and working for peace and justice.MCC's priorities are disaster relief, sustainable community development and justice and peacebuilding. It approaches its mission by addressing poverty, oppression, and injustice, and their systemic causes; accompanying partners and the church in a process of mutual transformation; building bridges across cultural, political and economic divides; and caring for creation.MCC seeks to live and serve nonviolently, peacefully and justly in each relationship, incorporating listening and learning, accountability and mutuality, transparency and integrity.
Equal Exchange is a Fair Trade organization that buys directly from small-scale farmer cooperatives, owned and run by the farmers themselves. Because our farmer partners are paid above market prices for their crops, they are able to make investments in community projects, educational programs, and technical trainings. These cooperative organizations also help keep rural communities healthy and strong, and keep local cultures vibrant. Equal Exchange is also committed to supporting sustainable farming methods that help green the earth through reforestation, natural resource conservation and organic practices.
