The coffee world is always changing and evolving – that’s part of what makes it so exciting. Lately, there’s been a lot of buzz about Keurig* coffee makers and K-cup* single serve coffee, and everyone at Equal Exchange has been in on the conversation. We’ve been listening, too, to the concerns and preferences of our customers and doing everything we can to learn about this new corner of the coffee market. After many months of discussion and development, we have an exciting announcement: Equal Exchange is now offering three of our most popular blends in single serve cups for your Keurig. We’re proud to be able to offer you a single serve cup that’s truly different: environmentally friendly, good for farmers and absolutely delicious.

The Cooperation in Productivity event was the first time Equal Exchange has organized a peer-led, on-farm learning experience between farmer organizations. It was incredibly exciting, not just because it was the first event of its kind for us, but because of all the farmer-driven content.

I was in a hot room, sitting in a circle with colorfully dressed Ugandan women representing the 10 primary societies of Gumutindo Coffee Co-op. Right away I knew that I was taking part in something special.

Part Two: Here in South India, we can report there have been positive changes in the last few years in the effort by Peeramade Development Society (PDS) and Tea Promoters of India (TPI) to empower small tea farmers.  Peeramade Development Society is a Catholic church of India based NGO that has a variety of projects to support the rural poor.  Tea Promoters of India is a unique family-owned tea operation that has a foundational commitment to authentic fair trade and to small tea producers.

Ten years ago, Equal Exchange brought a group of food co-op and natural food store representatives to visit CEPICAFE, one of our small farmer coffee co-op partners in northern Peru.  We stayed four days and nights living and working along side the coffee farmers, “helping” them with the harvest.  One of my most fond memories was during lunch following that first full morning (ie 4 hours) picking coffee. We had had a lot of fun, laughing, singing, and telling jokes with the farmers, while they tried to teach us their techniques.  But truth be told, the work is back-breaking, the hike to the farms was exhausting, and the sun was hot.

Fair Trade, like coffee, is complex, rich and fascinating. This month, we are making available a new educational resource, The History of Authentic Fair Trade.  In comic book format, we present a version of Fair Trade that is shared by many Equal Exchange colleagues, allies, and partners.
